Grove ASSAULT

The Assault is Grove's first racing mountain bike and remained relatively unchanged over the years. It exemplifies classic mountain bike design, and was the platform from which all other Grove designs began. Most of the team frames were Assaults.

This Assault was painted to emulate fall foliage - those are soft leaves airbrushed on a yellow base, including the Girven Flex Stem and Hot Rods.

Chad Rockey has this Assault:

Maroon Assault- my very first Grove. Sold it and bought it back. Repainted it and it is lovely. I am considering building it up the same as the morning Bill brought it to my house! I am missing a few of the components but I can come close.

As far as I recall Grove was the only builder to offer glow in the dark as a standard option. By day they looked kinda creamy-peachy-pinkish-orange, with the odd hue a glow-stick has. But at night, they do glow! The digital camera was able to catch it on this 14 year old Assault, shot in the furnace room at the Bicycle Shop in State College, PA in 2004. It belongs to Kevin Moore, a former owner of the Bicycle Shop. This bike is in almost perfect, original condition with matching Rock Shox.

An Assault at Freeze Thaw bikes in State College, PA, built and ridden by Justin Wagner. Justin's shop buys and sells used bikes and parts, so drop them a line if you're looking to buy or sell.

This Assault belongs to Jeff Holder in Philadelphia. Jeff was the photographer for the color catalog.

From an ebay sale by Rody Walter, a former Grove apprentice who now builds under the Groovy Cycles label:

This bike holds a special place in my heart and I'm crushed to have to sell it, but sometimes life forces change. Grove Innovations was a small frame builder based out of State College Pa during the 80's and 90's. Bill was a designer/fabricator that, in my opinion, built the finest steel frames of the era. At that time, I had to choose between a Grove and a FAT, the Grove won by a landslide. Known for their immaculate fabrication, wild paint, and personable customer service, Bill led his company to cult status, spanning across the Globe. The Assault is the classic east coast technical trail bike, fast, agile, and climbs like it's on fire. I love this bike and hate to part with it, but I must. I sincerely hope it will go to a good home.

Postscript: This bike sold to a buyer in the Netherlands.

This Assault frame is painted in the 'Clown" color scheme. It is part of the First Flight Bikes collection.
