This new map covers the entire 265,000-acre Susquehannock State Forest, portions of Sproul and Elk State Forests, Hammersley and Square Timber Wild Areas, the Susquehannock Trail System, and nearby gateway communities including Coudersport, Galeton, Emporium, Renovo, Smethport, and Port Allegany. Produced in partnership with our friends at the PA Wilds Center, this map unlocks a truly special outdoor recreation landscape.
As one of our team noted, there may be more green (for public land) on this map than any Purple Lizard Map so far!
Some of highlights include:
- 12 State Parks including Sinnemahoning, Denton Hill, Kettle Creek, Lyman Run and of course, Cherry Springs (a nationally designated Dark Skies park).
- Long-distance hiking trails including the 85-mile Susquehannock Trail System, the 38-mile Bucktail Path, and sections of the Donut Hole Trail
- Scenic gravel roads and remote backcountry routes
- Wild Areas including Hammersley and Square Timber

But the dark sky magic on this map doesn’t stop there. The May Hollow Syway near Emporium is the regions newest Dark Skies viewing area. Exceptional night-sky viewing opportunities extend throughout the surrounding state forests, public lands, overlooks, and mountain vistas across the broader region.
