As one of our team noted, there may be more green (for public land) on this map than any Purple Lizard Map so far!

Some of highlights include:

  • 12 State Parks including Sinnemahoning, Denton Hill, Kettle Creek, Lyman Run and of course, Cherry Springs (a nationally designated Dark Skies park).
  • Long-distance hiking trails including the 85-mile Susquehannock Trail System, the 38-mile Bucktail Path, and sections of the Donut Hole Trail
  • Scenic gravel roads and remote backcountry routes
  • Wild Areas including Hammersley and Square Timber
  • Dark Skies viewing areas including Cherry Springs State Park Astronomy Field and the May Hollow Skyway
  • Equestrian destinations including the Kettle Creek Equestrian Trail System and Dyer Horsey Hilton Equestrian Campground
  • ATV trail systems including Whiskey Springs and Susquehannock
  • Cross-country ski opportunities
  • Scenic overlooks, waterfalls, mountain streams, campsites and more unique natural features throughout the region

This landscape is extraordinary in every direction: vast swaths of remote public land, winding backroads, quiet trails, mountain streams, and so much more.

With remoteness comes - you guessed it, Dark Skies! Cherry Springs State Park, which is included on the Dark Skies Purple Lizard Map, is one of the most recognized dark-sky destinations in the country. But the dark sky magic on this map doesn’t stop there. The May Hollow Syway near Emporium is the regions newest Dark Skies viewing area. Exceptional night-sky viewing opportunities extend throughout the surrounding state forests, public lands, overlooks, and mountain vistas across the broader region.

As with all Purple Lizard Maps, this map combines the exceptionally detailed, ground-truthed information you have come to expect from Purple Lizard with beautiful, easy-to-read, award-winning cartographic design.

This map meets all of your outdoor adventure planning needs: detailed trail information, topographic and hydrographic detail, and that exceptional Purple Lizard outdoor recreation legend that helps you quickly spot trails, backroads, parks, campsites, overlooks, water access, and explore all the best recreation opportunities across this exceptional landscape.

And of course, those little purple lizards are tucked throughout the map, highlighting special places and adding an extra layer of exploration and discovery as you make your own adventure along the way.
